Makeup Brush Cleaning

originally posted Nov. 23, 2011

This morning I decided it was time to clean my makeup brushes. I try to do a deep cleaning at least once a month.

How to clean your makeup brushes:

Use the bathroom sink and get the bristles of the brush completely wet. Put a small dollop of liquid hand soap in the palm of your hand. Then swirl the wet bristles on your palm and create a lather with the soap. Work the soap through the bristles then rinse the brush under the running water. Try to separate the bristles under the running water until the water runs clear.

Lay a towel down on a flat surface and lay your wet brushes on their side to dry. NEVER put wet brushes in a cup with bristles facing up. Water can run down inside the bristles and grow germs. Also, if your brushes have wooden handles it can start to rot the wood.

Let the brushes air dry. This can sometimes take up to 24 hours.

If you are using your brushes every day, try to deep clean them at least once a month and spray them down with a brush cleaner on a daily basis. You may want to deep clean foundation and powder brushes weekly if you are prone to breakouts.

This is how I've been cleaning my brushes for the past 10-15 years and some of my brushes are that old! Quality brushes should last you at least that long.

How do you clean your brushes and how often? I love to hear new tips and tricks.

Thanks for reading!
